Basics of interview preparation

In the previous interview preparation article, we presented a roadmap for preparing for an interview. If you haven't seen it yet, please take a look. When preparing for an interview, it is important to communicate your thoughts succinctly and with impact. This time, we will introduce expected questions and answer patterns.

  • Reason for aspiration
  • Self-Promotion
  • What I want to study at university
  • About high school life
  • future goals
  • University Questions
  • News Questions

The way you speak can make a big difference in the impression you make on others. In addition to the content, you should also think about how you communicate it. Below are three patterns I often tell my students.

  1. Conclusion + reason
→ Recommended for beginners. Concise and easy to explain.
Example: My ideal future is to solve the world's poverty problem and become a person who can contribute to society. The reason is...
  2. Current situation + issues + solutions
→ Effective for people who tend to get scattered. Allows you to explain things in an organized manner.
  3. PREP method(Point → Reason → Example → Point)
→ A logical and easy-to-understand way of organizing and expressing your opinions. It takes practice to master.

We will introduce the key points for completing your self-promotion in four steps.

  1. Consistency with your reasons for applying
It is important that your self-promotion and reasons for applying are connected.
  2. Ultimately, making an impact
Include the keywords you want to convey and leave an impression with short words.
  3. Communicate your enthusiasm
It is important to be conscious of having a conversation in your own words, rather than just memorizing.
  4. Speak with confidence
If you are anxious, you may unconsciously look away, so practice repeatedly to build your confidence.

Instead of trying to tackle all four at once, work through them one at a time.

For students who are struggling with self-promotion, we will introduce an example of a composition that utilizes the PREP method.

  1. Start with the conclusion
Briefly describe who you are. It is effective to include "succinct and impactful keywords."
  2. Give reasons and examplesThat
Talk about experiences and anecdotes that support your conclusion in the following order: situation → challenge/goal → action → result. Emphasize not only your successes but also the lessons and growth you gained from them. The key word is "growth."
  3. State your future goals, linking them to your studies at university
Talk about your strengths and how you want to use what you've learned at university for your future. You can differentiate yourself by linking it to the university curriculum and research content, and also by including how you want to contribute to society and what kind of person you want to become.

Everyone starts from the same point when practicing for an interview, but the number of times you practice and the amount of feedback you receive will make a difference. If you are just starting out, aim to practice once a week.Just doing that will make a difference. Self-practice is also effective.Take a video with your smartphone and check your facial expressions and gestures to improve them.By correcting your eye line and hand movements, you can give off a more confident impression.
