NOVA Language Company, Inc. conducted a survey about English learning among students of "Eki-mae Ryugaku NOVA" and "Gaba One-on-One English Conversation" courses.
Target: 598 students
The best way to improve your English conversation skills
- No. 1: Prepare and review lessons
I make the most progress when I review the meaning, pronunciation, and listening of phrases after the lesson. - No. 2: Just talk to native speakers (over and over again)
Practice expressing what you want to say in English with the help of a native teacher. - No. 3: Listen repeatedly and listen intently
Listen to English audio and translate as you listen, and if you still can't understand, read the Japanese translation to understand. - No. 4: Take one-on-one lessons
If possible, take one-on-one lessons with the same instructor. For beginners, I think group lessons with random instructors are good. - (Tie)No.4: Repeated learning through online classes (LIVE STATION)
Take LIVE STATION repeatedly to understand the content and pronunciation, and then review it in face-to-face lessons at an English conversation school.

Less effective study methods
- 1st place: Nothing in particular
No. The more you do it, the more you will learn. You have to do everything. There is nothing that is ineffective, so it's good to do it! - No. 2: Memorizing English vocabulary
Memorizing words by rote. Writing words over and over again. If you memorize a word by itself, you will forget its meaning immediately. - No.3: Listening only
Listening to English news. If you don't concentrate when listening, your listening skills won't improve. - 4th place: Self-study using reference books and question books
I realized that I wouldn't improve my skills if I just studied at my desk without having direct conversations with foreigners. - #5: Sticking to grammar
If I get too hung up on grammar, I won't be able to speak anything, so I try not to worry too much about it unless it's something vital.

In order to be effective in English study, it is important not just to memorize knowledge but also to know how to use it. In particular, improving your listening skills and dictation (practicing writing down what you hear) are very effective.
